Sorry, not a political one, but a mathematical one!

There's a lot going around about how many squares are in this picture:

Now, I've seen a lot of answers, ranging from 21 to 42. Here's the right answer, but first, lets go over a couple very important rules:

1. You can only count squares inside this picture, no sides outside of the picture.

2. All squares must have equal sides (judging by human eyes, none of this "there is no true square" stuff)

Okay, so here's how I counted it (thanks to MS Paint!)

First, the biggest square of all:

Sounds like a lot of people missed this in the count, but its a tricky one. Next, let's add up the basic squares:

Now, some people may say "hey, some of those aren't really squares, they are L shapes!" which you would be right, except the way I highlighted these by filling in black doesn't stop the four sides of the square to continue through those little ones. So with the big one, and these 16 littler ones, we're at 17 total. Let's check out some more squares here:

Each of these littlest ones add 4 to our count for a total of 25 (17+8). We're not done there though.

We can't forget the two squares that make up those 8 littlest ones. So now we're at 27 total squares. Here's where I think a lot of people miss out on some hidden squares.

There's 3 squares that are 2x2 in the top row...

...three more in the middle row...

...and three more in the bottom row! That brings our total count to 36! But wait, there's 4 more here too!

And now you see the final four squares, measuring 3x3! 40 squares is what you get without overlapping.

Feel free to correct me if I forgot some I didn't overlap!

I really wasn't thinking clearly when I decided to do gym time to this degree. Although, I'm sure by the end of summer, I won't feel so bad. Now let's get on with the movie reviews.

First up is Ghostbusters 2. We owned this movie on VHS when I was a kid, and it got watched a lot more than the original. Not sure why, probably because we didn't own the original.

I still enjoy it, and it's got a lot of the humor I've grown to love in movies. However, it's also lost some luster for me. Probably because when I was watching this growing up, I wanted to be a Ghostbuster, and nowdays, I just want to play the game. Kinda sad, really.

Aside from lost childhood dreams, it's still a gem in my book, and I would recommend it to anyone.

The next movie is Cars. Let's be completely honest here. Owen Wilson is a great voice actor, and I feel he really portrays the character of Lightning McQueen well. all the other stars? For some reason, they just come off sounding like themselves, and it pulls my imagination out of the movie.

It's not my favorite animation, but it's alright. I probably would watch this movie about once every couple years because someone else wants to pop it in. Me, I'll once again wave to it as it passes me on the road of life.

Next up for movie watching are two of my favorites, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and The Bourne Ultimatum.

See you next time!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15401767380601381115noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1764735584440677977.post-42940080674205715472012-06-21T20:03:00.001-07:002012-06-21T20:03:57.702-07:00My Summer ChallengeWell, it's summer...or so my sweat glands tell me so. it's hot out, people are dressing with less and less everyday, and the giant burning ball of death is staying in our sky longer.

So what better way to celebrate than to challenge myself to another movie marathon.

Oh, you didn't hear about the first one? That's a shame, but I shall retell the tale.

As everyone knows (or should know by now) I am a huge fan of two things. First, Joss Whedon. The man has such an awesome touch to everything he does, and his shows are among my favorites. Second, the Marvel movies that have been coming out the past 10 years. What can I say, aside from a few bad ones, they are all generally pleasing to my inner geek.

So when The Avengers was scheduled to come out, my lovely wife pointed out that our local theatre was doing an Ultimate Marvel Movie Marathon. That event entailed Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor in 3D, Captain America in 3D, all leading up to the midnight release of The Avengers in 3D. In total that's over 14 hours in the theatre. 14 glorious hours of movies and geekery.

So what's a person to do? I bought two tickets, and took one of my closest friends, who was also available that day. Neither of us had tried this before, and so we packed appropriately, dressed in layers, hired some street urchins to be our messengers and delivery boys for food, and packed in.

Needless to say, we survived. It was tough (it's surprising how much sitting takes out of a man) but we made it through all the awesomeness and glory, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

But it left me with a hunger...a hunger for more events like this...

So now we're at the Summer Challenge. This is my way of enjoying summer, and what a task it is!

Here are the rules I'm setting forth:

1. Every day I watch a movie, I will spend time at the gym equal to the running time of the movie I will watch.

2. I will watch them in order, without fast forwarding past boring, scary, confusing, or stupid parts.

3. I will not buy or rent the DVDs to watch, instead, I must find them on Netflix (or anywhere else on the Internet) or borrow them from friends.

4. I will review each one after watching it. Here, on my blog.

5. I will finish the entire list prior to the first day of Fall, which is September 22nd, 2012.

There you go. The rules are set, now all I need is the list. Thanks to Glenn Kenny, one has already been compiled for me. Here's the list, in order:

50) Ghostbusters 2
49) Cars
48) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
47) The Bourne Ultimatum
1) Star Wars A New Hope

Now, the only issue with this list is that by the time I get to #12, it will be out of the theatres, but not available on DVD or Blu-Ray before my deadline, but since I've seen it thrice, I think we can call that one watched...

So, dear Readers, will you join me on this indoor movie fest? Maybe even just the exercise part?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15401767380601381115noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1764735584440677977.post-21241804510255660672011-10-08T10:31:00.000-07:002011-10-08T10:31:00.843-07:00The Unnamable Mother Of<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
I know I said I would update more after I got married, but then I had a thought. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Long ago, I had my own web comic. It was a screen cap comic (which means I take screen shots from movies and add my own dialogue) and I had a lot of fun with it! The same fun I had when I was writing chapters of "The Wordsmith"! So I thought I would bring it over here and start posting the comics on my blog!

So starting later this week, I will be reposting my web comic starting with the first page! I will set it to update a couple times a week while I'm on my honeymoon, and when I get back, there will be periodic installments of "The Wordsmith" and my web comic as I continue blogging!

At the end of May, I shut off my internet, and starting teh process of moving. Now that' I've moved to a temporary location before moving in with my then-to-be-wife, I've been swamped with wedding tasks, geek binges, and the occaisonal nap.

So I do apologize, but updates will come back regularly at the end of September/beginning of October when we are settled into our new life together!

Thanks for understanding!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15401767380601381115noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1764735584440677977.post-84026449946485620952011-05-13T14:48:00.000-07:002011-05-13T14:52:09.812-07:00The Wordsmith - Chapter Three(Chapter One, Two)

The Wordsmith jumped up from his seat, grabbed Ava's hand and ran over to the booth Fred was sitting at. They both stared for a second at his plate of steak. Then Ava had a thought.

"Why does this matter? I mean, it's not hurting anything, is it?" Ava looked at Fred's plate, half expecting it to sprout eyes and look at her.

"It does matter," the Wordsmith said, "You see, if Fred's jacket doesn't get messy, he won't know the train is speeding up, and therefore, he misses a crucial moment in the story."

"Why don't we just tell him then? Hey, Fred! The train is about to speed up." Ava was perplexed. Fred acted like he didn't hear her. "Fred? Hello? FRED!" Ava's shout should have gotten his attention.

"He can't hear you, Ava. In fact, only I can hear you right now. We're not in the story yet. We're just in the book, watching the story play out. Now, give me a hand in catching this Musing please." The Wordsmith had a pair of salad tongs in his hand now, hovering over the plate. Ava turned away from Fred, and looked intently at the plate of steak.

"Okay," she said, gathering up all her courage. "What do I do?"

"All you have to do is say 'this plate of steak needs to be soup' and say it right at the plate. I'll snag it when it moves and we'll be down one Musing."

Ava stared intently at the plate. She wasn't sure what would happen when she said the words, but her curiosity was too much to resist. She sucked in her breath, and in the loudest voice she could muster, she yelled at the steak.

"THIS PLATE OF STEAK NEEDS TO BE SOUP!" As soon as she yelled it, she regretted it. Taken by surprise at the volume of her yell, the Wordsmith dropped the tongs, right onto the plate! The plate itself suddenly became what looked like a little purple ball of fur with beady black eyes and two hands. It quickly snatched the tongs before the Wordsmith could grab them back, leaped off the table in one tiny hop, and started bouncing across the car toward the door.

"Oh no!" the Wordsmith bolted after it in a state of panic. "We've got to get those tongs back! Come on Ava! AND NO MORE SHOUTING!"

Ava ran after them both, extremely confused about what was so important about those tongs.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15401767380601381115noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1764735584440677977.post-52328396416761765582011-05-12T08:55:00.000-07:002011-05-13T13:41:33.540-07:00The Wordsmith - Chapter Two(Chapter One is here)

Ava thought the man looked very silly.

He was wearing a big pirate hat with a picture of a kitten on it, a big red shirt with 7 pockets sewn on the front, blue jeans, and on his feet were one sandal and one cowboy boot.

"You look silly" Ava said.

"Nonsense. I look perfectly acceptable. It's you who look silly, you've got no hat!" He reached into on of his shirt pockets, and pulled out a jump rope. He held it out to her.

"No thanks Mr. Wordsmith. I've already worn one of those today. I didn't like it."

"Very well. How about some tea instead?" Ava sat down across the table from him and took the cup of tea she was offered. She took a sip and found it surprisingly sweet.

"Who are you?" Ava was curious how he was in the story with her, even though she'd never read about him before.

"I'm the Wordsmith, protector of literature and hunter of Musings. You know all about Musings, of course."

"Not really" Ava said, sipping more of her tea. "What are they?"

"Ah! Musings are little creatures that get into stories and change them around. Some of them are harmless, others can do horrible things, like turn good guys into bad guys, or even erase characters from the entire story!"

"Wow, they sound bad. How do you find them?"

"Well, if you know the story well enough, you can pick out things that have changed from the original story. For example, I know there's a couple musings in this story, but I don't know the story very well. It was written before I became a Wordsmith. Which is why I pulled you in here with me. You know this story word for word, don't you?"

"It's my favorite book! We're at the part where Fred Finch is thinking about who left the mysterious package in his room, just before the train starts speeding up. He notices it because the soup he's having starts shaking and spills on his jacket."

"Did you say soup?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Soup? You're absolutely sure?"

Ava thought hard. In her mind she went over the words from the chapter again, and she definitely remembered Fred having soup. But now that she thought about it, when she saw him right after she arrived, he was eating steak!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15401767380601381115noreply@blogger.com0
